Financial Aid & Scholarships
Any financial aid not specifically described below requires submission of two forms: Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), and Financial Aid Transcript. Contact the Financial Aid Office at 208-426-1664 for availability of forms and deadlines.

GEM Scholarships waive non-resident tuition* for out-of-state and international graduate students with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 who are accepted into an eligible** graduate degree program. Qualified students who attended Boise State as an undergraduate ARE eligible for a graduate GEM Scholarship, even if they received GEM support as an undergraduate.
The MBA Career Start program has a limited number of GEM Grad awards they can offer. Please contact the MBA Career Start program for details.
There is no separate application process. If an eligible applicant is accepted into a graduate degree program, then the Financial Aid Office makes the offer to the student through the student’s BroncoWeb account. GEM Scholarships are awarded for one year and may be renewed for one additional year if the student takes at least 9 graduate credits per semester in each of his/her first two semesters and maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0. Two years is the maximum award period at the master’s level.
To be eligible for a GEM Scholarship a student must:
- Have a permanent residence outside the State of Idaho (both international students and US citizens are eligible)
- Have a GPA as an undergraduate of 3.0 or higher
- Be accepted into a graduate degree program (students in certificate programs are not eligible)
GEM Scholarships are awarded to eligible students on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who receive a Graduate Assistantship (see below) with a tuition waiver will have their GEM Scholarship replaced by the assistantship because the latter covers all tuition and fees while the GEM Scholarship waives only out-of-state tuition.
*The student is still responsible for Resident fees; this represents a savings of approximately $9,000/year. Current information on tuition and fee costs at Boise State University can be found at the University Tuition & Fees page.
**The off-campus Social Work graduate programs and the online graduate programs in Educational Technology, Nursing, and Instructional and Performance Technology are ineligible for the Gem Scholarship. The MBA Career Start program has a limited number of Gem Scholarships they can award. Please contact the MBA Career Start program at graduatebusiness@boisestate.edu for details.
Assistantships and Fellowships are awarded by departments and include a stipend and a waiver of fees. In addition, non-resident tuition is waived for any non-resident student who receives an assistantship or fellowship award. You may obtain a Graduate Assistantship Application from the Graduate College or the department to which you are applying.
